Why Blocking Suspicious Sites Is Becoming Crypto Safety’s First Line

Cryptocurrency scams don’t always come with obvious warnings. A suspicious pop-up or poorly written email might still raise eyebrows, but many modern scams are designed to look ordinary. A message can appear to come from someone you know, an investment opportunity can look professional and an authorization screen can resemble one you have used before.

That makes the moment before visiting a website more important than it might seem. If a suspicious link leads to a fraudulent destination, stopping there can prevent the next step from happening at all. For crypto users, that pause can be the difference between spotting a scam and handing over information that is difficult to recover.

Older cyber threats used to rely on obvious malware or attempts to steal passwords directly. Today, social engineering can be just as important. A scam might begin with a text message, social media conversation, fake investment page or request to authorize an unfamiliar application.

The danger is that each step can appear harmless. A visitor could be asked to log in, connect a wallet, verify an account or approve an application. By the time something feels wrong, sensitive information or account access may already have been exposed.

Developing a habit to block site can create an early interruption point. Users stop before entering credentials, financial information or wallet details. This doesn’t replace careful verification. But it does add another barrier between a scammer's message and the user's assets.

Recent losses make prevention more urgent

The scale of online fraud makes prevention harder to dismiss. Americans reported a record $15.9 billion in scam losses in the latest figures cited by the Associated Press, representing a 25% increase from 2024. An AP-NORC poll also found that 98% of Americans suspected they had been targeted by scammers, while three in 10 said they had personally lost money or information to a scam.

Once money has been transferred to a scammer, it can be difficult to recover it. Crypto transactions can be especially challenging because they might cross borders and don’t have the same protections associated with traditional banking. That separates prevention and recovery. Reporting a fraudulent transaction or trying to recover stolen funds happens after the damage has occurred. In comparison, blocking a suspicious destination can interrupt the process before a user reaches the point of making a costly decision.

Relationship scams exploit unfamiliar investment websites

Not every crypto scam starts with an investment advertisement. Some begin with a conversation.

The University of Arizona recently warned its community about relationship-based investment scams that begin with unexpected emails, texts or social media messages. The scammer might spend time building credibility before gradually introducing cryptocurrency or another investment opportunity. A victim could then be directed toward an unfamiliar website or app.

There are signs to look out for. An unsolicited contact could take an unusual interest in someone's work or personal life. Then they could slowly steer the conversation toward money, recommending a particular investment platform or encouraging the recipient to increase their investment.

An unfamiliar crypto domain should be treated as a decision point, not an invitation to keep researching from inside the site. Instead of logging in or entering payment details to find out whether the opportunity is legitimate, users can leave the page and independently check the company through a trusted source.

Strong account security still has blind spots

Passwords and multi-factor authentication are still important. They just can’t protect against every type of attack. The FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center recently warned about OAuth consent phishing, in which criminals persuade victims to approve access for a malicious application. Rather than stealing a password, the attacker can obtain access through a permission the victim knowingly grants.

This distinction is important. A person could have a strong password and MFA enabled and still be exposed if they approve an application they believe is legitimate. The FBI notes that this type of access can persist even after a password is changed. This means the malicious application may need to be removed through the relevant security settings.

A block site habit supports smarter browsing

Good browsing habits don’t have to be complicated. When an unexpected link arrives, take a moment before you open it. If something looks suspicious or repeatedly leads to scam content, blocking it can prevent an accidental return. For services you use regularly, access them through saved bookmarks or by typing the known address rather than following an unexpected message.

It is also worth checking app permissions after interacting with an unfamiliar authorization screen. If an application was granted access unexpectedly, review the account's security settings and remove permissions that should not be there.

Site blocking works best as one layer of protection rather than a complete security solution. Users still need to verify unfamiliar messages, question unexpected investment opportunities and keep account-security settings up to date.

Crypto users need fewer risky clicks

Crypto safety often comes down to decisions made before a transaction takes place. A suspicious website can be the point where a convincing social-engineering attempt turns into a login, wallet connection or financial loss, whether someone is browsing on an iPhone or another device.

Blocking risky destinations gives users one more opportunity to stop and reassess. Combined with careful verification and sensible account security, it can make the path from an unexpected message to a financial loss much harder to complete.

Safer crypto behavior starts before a wallet is connected, a login is entered or an investment is made. Sometimes, the most useful security decision is simply choosing not to click through.
