Promptchan vs OurDream AI: Which AI character platform is better?

One is an image studio with a chat companion. The other is an all-in-one companion that also makes images and video. I stepped through both to see which builds a better character.

Promptchan

Image-first studio

OurDream AI

Chat-first companion

18+   Both are adult platforms. Screenshots are AI-generated and shown to document the product. This review is informational.

Two takes on the same idea, pulling in different directions

Promptchan and OurDream AI both promise a custom AI character you can see and talk to, and both put an invented currency between you and the product, Gems on one side and DreamCoins on the other. That is where the similarity ends. Promptchan is built around image generation, a studio tuned for anime and fantasy art with a chat companion bolted on. OurDream AI is built around the character, an all-in-one roleplay platform that folds chat, images, and video into one flow and lets you start talking in seconds.

So the honest question is not which app is better in the abstract, but which shape fits what you want to make. If you are producing pictures of a character, that is one contest. If you want to pick a character and have a conversation that occasionally turns into an image, that is another. Both were run like a new user, open it, create or choose a character, try to chat, and try to generate a visual, with a screenshot at every step. The Promptchan walkthrough draws on TechRaisal's hands-on testing, and OurDream AI was stepped through screen by screen.

Promptchan

An AI image studio tuned for anime and fantasy, metered in Gems, with a companion chat attached. Browser only.

THE IMAGE SPECIALIST

Promptchan is first and foremost an image generator. Its diffusion models are trained on anime and manga data, so stylized characters come out consistently well and fast, while photorealistic output is a mixed bag and hands remain the usual giveaway. The real feature is the seed value, since locking a seed lets you hold one character's face across a whole set of images, which is what turns it from a novelty into a workflow.

Everything is priced in Gems, a fixed unit, and the interesting parts sit high up the ladder. Custom character creation, video, and voice are all Pro-tier features, and there is no mobile app, so it lives in the browser. Here is how the same test went, screen by screen.

1 - IMAGE GENERATION

The generator shows the Gem cost before you commit

The generator: an Image and Video toggle, a Safe Mode switch that hides NSFW output, a prompt box, and a Gem cost shown up front. This standard image reads Cost 2.

The create screen leads with an Image or Video choice, a Safe Mode toggle, and a prompt box, and it prints the Gem cost of the current settings before you press Create. Quality scales that cost, with a standard image at 1 Gem, an Extreme at 2, a Max 4K at 3, and a single video clip at 28. It runs on a v4 model and returns most images in a few seconds.

The Gem meter is always visible. Every generation tells you its price in advance, which is honest, but it also means quality and cost are the same dial, and a serious 4K session burns through an entry plan quickly.

2 - COMPANION CHAT

The chat is better than expected, until the paywall

The companion: Discover Profiles, Create a Character, a Chat and Story mode toggle, a voice option, and a model selector, with in-character prose replies.

The companion side pairs a profile browser and a character creator with a chat that can run in Chat or Story mode, plus a voice option and a model picker. Responses were quick and stayed in character across a long back and forth, without the robotic phrasing that gives most bots away. The limit is the wall, since NSFW chat, extended memory, and HD image exchange all need a subscription, and hitting that after a few free exchanges is jarring.

Better than its reputation, until the wall. The writing held up, but chat spends the same Gems as images, so on this platform a sentence and a picture compete for the same wallet.

3 - EXPLORE AND FILTERS

A filterable gallery with a Safe Mode switch

The Explore bar: Trending, Newest, and Following sorts, media and style filters, and a Safe Mode is On toggle on the right.

The library is browsable and filterable by media type and art style, with Trending, Newest, and Following sorts, and a Safe Mode switch that gates NSFW output rather than hiding it behind a separate account. It is a clean way to find a look and copy the prompt behind it, which is how Promptchan teaches you its own style.

Safe Mode is a switch, not a wall. The adult gate is a toggle you control, but the thing most people come to build, a custom character, still sits on the Pro tier rather than in this free browsing view.

4 - PRICING AND GEMS

You buy a currency, then spend it on everything

Gem top-up packs, from 50 Gems at $4.99 up to 10,000 at $299.99, sold on top of the Plus, Premium, and Pro subscriptions.

On top of subscriptions, Promptchan sells Gem packs outright, from 50 Gems at $4.99 to 10,000 at $299.99. The free tier is 10 Gems a day, about two 4K images, Plus is $11.99 for 100 Gems, and Pro at $26.99 is the only tier with video, voice, and custom characters. The one genuinely generous detail is that Gems roll over month to month and stay in your account even if you cancel.

You buy a currency, not a product. The sticker price hides the real one, because what a Gem actually buys depends on quality, and the vendor can change that ratio without touching $11.99. The rollover is the rare consumer-friendly exception.

Beyond the test

Two things a short session hides. The Gem economy has been repriced before, with one report noting Plus dropped from 300 Gems to 100 at the same $11.99, which roughly tripled the cost per image without the sticker moving, so check the live allocation before you pay. And the platform has removed features that users built workflows on, most notably the ability to upload an outside image for editing, which left paying users stranded. Reviews average a healthy 4.2 to 4.8, but almost every serious complaint is about the economy around the images rather than the images themselves.

OurDream AI

An all-in-one roleplay companion spanning Chat, Images, Video, and Fusion, metered in DreamCoins, with instant no-signup chat.

THE ALL-IN-ONE COMPANION

OurDream AI is built around the character rather than the picture. It bills itself as a no-limits roleplay platform where you create a fully customizable companion and then chat, generate images, and even generate video of them, all in one place. The headline promise is speed, a dream character and a conversation in seconds, and the homepage leans into that with a Start Free button instead of a hard signup wall.

Like Promptchan, it runs on a currency, DreamCoins, that meters messages, images, and video alike. The difference in feel is the on-ramp, since you can start talking before you make an account, and the paywall arrives later, at the moment you want a visual. Here is the same test, step by step.

1 - LANDING PAGE

The homepage is upfront about what it is

The landing page: a Chat, Images, Video, Fusion tag, a create-your-character headline, and copy describing a no-limits roleplay platform, with a Start Free button.

The homepage states the pitch plainly, create your dream character and chat in seconds, with a small tag spelling out the four modes, Chat, Images, Video, and Fusion. The copy is clear that this is an unfiltered adult companion platform, and the primary button is Start Free rather than a login gate, which sets the expectation that you can look around before committing.

It sets the tone immediately. There is no ambiguity about the category or the currency model. The page sells speed and breadth, chat plus images plus video, which is a wider promise than an image generator makes.

2 - START FREE

Start Free drops you into a character builder

After Start Free: a create-a-character flow with Female, Male, and Trans options, Realistic and Anime style cards, and a stepper across the top.

Clicking Start Free opens a guided builder rather than a signup form. The first step sets gender across Female, Male, and Trans, then offers a Realistic or Anime art direction, with a stepper along the top hinting at later stages for appearance and personality. You can explore the creation flow without an account, which mirrors the instant promise from the homepage.

Creation starts before login. Letting you build first and sign up later is a smart on-ramp, and the Realistic versus Anime split is the same core choice Promptchan makes, just framed as a companion rather than a render.

3 - EXPLORE GALLERY

The Explore gallery leads with scenarios

Explore: a grid of ready-made characters, each with a name, an age, a one-line scenario hook, like and chat counts, and a creator handle.

Explore is a grid of pre-made characters, and each card leads with a situation rather than just a look, a breakup, a bet, a reunion, along with an age, like and chat counts, and the handle of whoever made it. It reads more like a roleplay catalogue than an image gallery, which fits a platform built around conversation.

The gallery is scenario-first. Where Promptchan's gallery sells you a style and a prompt, OurDream's sells you a premise and a character to play it with. That is the clearest sign of which product each one really is.

4 - PICK A CHARACTER

A character card offers chat or image, side by side

The character detail for Lily: age and gender, a scenario blurb, and two buttons, Chat and Generate, from the same screen.

I opened a character named Lily, with an age, a gender, and a short scenario about wanting to belong. The detail view puts two actions next to each other, Chat to talk and Generate to make an image, so the conversation and the visual live on the same screen. That side-by-side is the Fusion idea the homepage promised, made concrete.

Chat or Generate, your call. Offering both from one card is the whole pitch. Promptchan makes you choose a mode, OurDream treats talking and picturing the same character as two taps of the same thing.

5 - THE CHAT

Chatting in seconds, with a coin meter running

The chat: a scripted, novel-style opening scene, a suggested reply, a message box, and a 5 dreamcoins left counter with Free coins on signup.

The chat opened straight into a written scene, with narration and dialogue formatted like prose, a suggested reply to get you moving, and a normal message box. In the top bar sits a small counter, 5 dreamcoins left, next to a Free coins on signup nudge. True to the tagline, the conversation begins with no account, but the balance ticks down as you go.

Chatting in seconds, on a meter. The instant start is real and it is the smoothest on-ramp of the two. The catch is the counter, since a handful of free coins is a taster designed to move you toward signing up.

6 - SCENE GENERATION

The visuals are where signup is required

Trying to generate a scene raises a Sign up to use Scene Generate prompt, offering Continue with Google or email.

Text chat is open to sample, but the moment I tried to generate a scene, the platform raised a Sign up to use Scene Generate modal, offering Google or email. So the gate is not on talking, it is on seeing, which is a deliberate choice about where the funnel begins. The side panel also shows the deeper controls, Members, Writing Style, Voice, Memory, Persona, and History, that a real session would use.

Chat is the free sample, visuals are the hook. Reversing the usual order, OurDream gives away the conversation and charges for the image, which is the opposite of where a pure image tool puts its wall.

7 - PRICING AND DREAMCOINS

DreamCoins sit in front of every message, image, and video

Pricing: a Free plan, Premium at $9.99 a month, and Deluxe at $29.99, plus DreamCoin add-on packs where 1000 coins is about 200 images.

The plans are Free, which hands out some DreamCoins and a limited trial of message, image, and video, Premium at $9.99 a month, down from $19.99 with 1000 bonus coins and yearly billing near $119.88, and Deluxe at $29.99, down from $59.99 with 5000 coins. On top of that sit DreamCoin packs, where the page pegs 1000 coins at roughly 200 images and 5000 at about 1000, so the coin-to-output ratio is at least stated plainly.

DreamCoins meter everything. As with Gems, the monthly price is only half the story, because coins stand between you and every message, image, and video, so your real cost is set by how fast your use burns them.

Beyond the test

A stepped-through pass shows the flow and the funnel, not the long haul. What it cannot tell you is how the chat holds up over a long session, how quickly DreamCoins drain once images and video are in play, or how renewals and refunds behave, all of which need weeks rather than minutes. Two practical notes, though. The coin-per-output figures on the pricing page let you do the division before you subscribe, which is more transparency than many rivals offer. And as with any adult companion service, the usual privacy caution applies, since these platforms store intimate chats, so read the policy and prefer private modes before you invest a real character in it.

The verdict

Winner as a character platform, OurDream AI

For the exact question in the title, which is the better AI character platform, OurDream AI edges it. It is built around the character rather than the render, so you can pick or create one, start chatting in seconds with no signup, and generate images and video of that same character from one screen. That integrated loop, chat plus images plus video around a single persona, is what most people mean by an AI character platform, and OurDream's instant on-ramp is the smoothest of the two.

Promptchan wins a different contest decisively. If your goal is producing images, especially anime and fantasy, and you care about seed-locked consistency across a set and the option of video, Promptchan is the specialist and the better tool, as long as you accept that Pro at $26.99 is the real entry point, that custom characters live there, and that Gems meter your conversations as well as your pictures. It is a studio with a companion attached, and judged as a studio it is very good.

The catch they share is the currency. Both slide an invented unit between you and the product, both gate their best features behind a subscription, and both are strictly adult. Do the division first, work out what a Gem or a coin actually buys for your use, and treat the free tier as a demo rather than a plan. Pick OurDream to live with a character, and Promptchan to picture one.
