Nobody needs the best AI music generator. They need the right one for one specific job, and the answer changes completely depending on what that job is. Here are six real ones, worked through end to end.
Most guides hand you eight tool profiles and leave you to work out which applies. That is backwards. Three questions eliminate most of the field before sound quality matters at all, and the first one disqualifies the tool that arguably sounds best.

Answer these in order. Each removes tools that cannot do your job regardless of how good they sound.
THE ONE THAT CATCHES EVERYONE Udio produces some of the best audio in this category, and you cannot download any of it. As a condition of its Universal Music Group settlement on 29 October 2025, Udio disabled downloads across every plan tier, paid ones included. Audio, video and stems are all blocked. It briefly reopened downloads for 48 hours after user backlash, then closed them again. A licensed relaunch is expected with no confirmed date. |
You have written lyrics or a concept, you want a finished song with vocals, and it is going out under your name on streaming platforms.
JOB 01 Releasing a track with vocals A full song, distributed commercially, with your name on it. USE Suno Pro at $10 a month, or $8 billed annually, for 2,500 credits and full commercial rights. ![]() WHY Version 5.5 is the strongest vocal model tested in this category. Lyrics sit on the rhythm rather than floating above it, and breath, vibrato and emotional inflection hold up across a full track. No competitor with downloadable output matches it on contemporary vocal styles. RUNNER-UP ElevenLabs Music, if the track needs multiple languages or you already pay ElevenLabs for voiceover. Slightly behind on English vocal character, ahead on licensing safety. THE TRAP Commercial rights attach to the plan you were on when the song was generated, not to the song. Anything made on the free tier is non-commercial permanently, and upgrading tomorrow does not convert it. Subscribe first, then generate. REAL COST $96 for the year on annual billing. Budget two or three generations per usable track, because failed attempts consume credits exactly like successful ones. |
WHAT YOU ARE NOT BUYING Suno grants you commercial rights and explicitly does not warrant that copyright vests in the output. The US Copyright Office has not recognised AI-generated music as copyrightable. You can distribute and monetise the track. You may not be able to stop someone else using it. |
Someone else is paying, their legal team may ask questions, and the deliverable ships under an agency name. The calculation is different here because the risk is not yours alone.
JOB 02 Client work with a paper trail Commercial delivery where someone downstream may audit the source. USE ElevenLabs Music, with commercial use included from roughly $5 to $6 a month at the entry tier. ![]() WHY It launched on licensing partnerships rather than settling lawsuits afterwards, with opt-in deals through Merlin and Kobalt plus a marketplace where rights holders monetise. For client work that difference outweighs a small quality gap, because you are not betting a deliverable on a pending ruling. RUNNER-UP Soundraw at around $11 a month, trained entirely on in-house data and therefore outside the litigation altogether. Weaker output, cleaner story, perpetual licence. THE TRAP Music supervisors and stock libraries need a documented chain of title showing who owns what. Undisclosed training data makes that hard to produce, which is why AI tracks meet friction in sync licensing even when the platform grants you rights. REAL COST $60 to $72 for the year, and the audio is professional 48kHz. The subscription also covers voice synthesis and sound effects, which matters if the ad needs narration too. |
Volume work. Nobody is listening closely to the music, it sits under narration, and the priority is never getting a copyright claim on a video you have already published.
JOB 03 Background music at volume Forty or more pieces a month, under narration, no claims. USE Beatoven.ai from around $2.50 to $6 a month, with a perpetual licence and no Content ID claims filed against your uploads. ![]() WHY It analyses video length and mood to generate soundtracks that follow the edit rather than looping under it, and its API drops into editing suites directly. For teams cutting content weekly that alignment saves more time than better audio would. RUNNER-UP Soundraw at about $11 a month if you want more granular control over tempo, mood and segment structure, with a perpetual commercial licence on all paid tiers. THE TRAP Do not use a song generator for this. Suno and ElevenLabs produce tracks with structure and vocals that fight your narration, and you will pay more per month for output that needs editing down. REAL COST $30 to $72 for the year, the cheapest job on this list. Perpetual licensing means tracks stay usable after you cancel. |
| Why this job goes to the cheap tools | What happens if you use a song generator instead |
|---|---|
| Music sits under speech, so detail is wasted | You pay two to four times more per month |
| You need forty pieces, not four great ones | Credits run out and failed generations still cost |
| Content ID claims are the real risk | Vocals and song structure fight your narration |
| Perpetual licences protect a back catalogue | Rights tied to subscription status get complicated at scale |
This is the job where every recommendation from the previous three sections becomes wrong, because you need something none of those tools provide.
JOB 04 A cue you actually own Orchestral or cinematic music, editable, with real ownership. USE AIVA Pro at roughly 33 to 49 euro a month, the only tool here that transfers copyright rather than granting a licence. ![]() WHY On Pro you own the composition outright, so you can register it, pursue infringers and sublicense it to others. Every other tool on this list gives you permission to use output you do not own. For scoring work where the cue may be licensed onward, that distinction is the whole job. ALSO AIVA outputs MIDI rather than a finished recording, so you rearrange and orchestrate with your own instruments and samples. It is a composition assistant, not a production shortcut, which is what film and game work usually needs. RUNNER-UP Stable Audio at about $11.99 a month for sound design, ambient beds and game audio, with real MIDI export and up to three minutes at 44.1kHz stereo. Cheaper, no copyright transfer. THE TRAP AIVA rendered audio does not match Suno or ElevenLabs for contemporary music, and people judge it on that. It is built for classical, cinematic and orchestral work, and comparing it to a pop song generator misses what it is for. REAL COST Around $588 for the year, twenty times the video scoring job. You are buying ownership, not access. |
Short, specific, textural. Not a song and not a full score, which puts it in a category most song generators handle badly.
JOB 05 Intros, stings and sound design Ten to thirty seconds each, precise texture, no vocals. USE Stable Audio 2.5 at around $11.99 a month, generating up to three minutes at 44.1kHz stereo from natural language prompts. ![]() WHY It is built for exactly this: instrumental beds, sound design, ambient textures, podcast intros and game audio. Its diffusion approach produces convincing orchestration, and it is the pick when you need a specific texture rather than a song structure. ALSO Real MIDI export means output enters your DAW as editable material rather than a fixed audio file, so you can trim a sting to the exact frame without re-generating. RUNNER-UP Soundraw, if you would rather pick mood and genre from controls than describe a texture in a prompt. THE TRAP Judged as a song generator Stable Audio fails, because that is not what it does. If you also need a theme song with vocals, that is a second subscription rather than a compromise on this one. REAL COST About $144 for the year, and one subscription usually covers an entire show including intro, outro and stings. |
No commercial use, no distribution, no client. The rules that dominate every other job on this list do not apply, which changes the answer entirely.
JOB 06 A one-off personal song Birthday, wedding, joke track. Never leaves a group chat. USE Suno free tier. 50 credits a day, roughly ten songs, no payment. WHY The free allowance is the most generous among the full-song generators, and version 5.5 quality is available on it. For a song nobody is selling, the licensing questions that shape every other job here are irrelevant. ALTERNATIVE Google Lyria 3 inside the Gemini app if you already subscribe, generating 30-second tracks from text or photo prompts with vocals in eight languages. Lyria 3 Pro extends to roughly three minutes. THE TRAP Free-tier songs are non-commercial permanently. If there is any chance the track becomes something you sell or publish, subscribe before generating rather than after. Credits also do not roll over, so unused daily allowance vanishes at reset. REAL COST Nothing, and that is the correct answer for this job. Gemini outputs carry a SynthID watermark, which is irrelevant for personal use. |
The same category spans a twentyfold price range, and the spread has almost nothing to do with audio quality.

Cheapest plan that legally covers each job, over twelve months.
| Job | Tool | Year | What the money buys |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scoring video | Beatoven.ai | $30 | Perpetual licence, no Content ID claims |
| Client work | ElevenLabs Music | $60 | Pre-licensed training, 48kHz, voice bundled |
| Releasing a track | Suno Pro annual | $96 | Best vocals, commercial rights, stems on Premier |
| YouTube library | Soundraw | $132 | In-house training, segment control, perpetual |
| Podcast intros | Stable Audio | $144 | Sound design focus, real MIDI export |
| Film cue | AIVA Pro | $588 | Copyright transfer, MIDI, orchestral specialism |
| Personal song | Suno free | $0 | Ten songs a day, non-commercial forever |
Every recommendation above sits on legal ground that moved in the last eighteen months and is still moving. This is the short version of what happened and what it means for the tool you pick.
| When | What happened | What it changed |
|---|---|---|
| June 2024 | UMG, Sony and Warner sue Suno and Udio, seeking up to $150,000 per work | Put both leading tools in legal jeopardy at once |
| 29 Oct 2025 | UMG settles with Udio, announcing a licensed walled garden platform | Udio disabled downloads the same day, across all tiers |
| Nov 2025 | Warner settles with Udio, then with Suno | Suno kept downloads. Udio did not |
| Dec 2025 to Apr 2026 | Merlin and Kobalt sign with Udio. ElevenLabs Music launches pre-licensed | Created a class of tools with cleaner training stories |
| July 2026 | Sony still litigating against both. US fair-use ruling now expected around 2027 | The core legal question stays open for another year or more |
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU SPECIFICALLY Nobody is coming after individual creators. The real risk is that a platform changes its terms overnight, as Udio did to its own paying users. The contract most of these services use also includes a class action waiver, so recourse is limited when that happens. |
THE HABIT WORTH BUILDING TODAY Download and back up every track the day you generate it. Keep dated proof of which plan you were on at creation. Udio users who skipped this permanently lost work they had made and paid for. Suno has already signalled that free-tier downloads will end, that paid tiers will get monthly download caps, and that current models will be deprecated when licensed replacements launch. |
These constraints apply across every tool in every job above, and knowing them prevents a wasted subscription.
• Copyright registration is unsettled. The US Copyright Office has not recognised AI-generated music as copyrightable, and Suno explicitly does not warrant that copyright vests in your output. AIVA Pro is the exception, and only because you own a composition rather than a generated recording.
• Technically demanding styles expose the models. Complex jazz improvisation and operatic passages are where even the best vocal models audibly fail. Contemporary pop, rap and rock hold up far better.
• AI signatures are detectable. Output from every generator carries artifacts that distribution platforms can identify, regardless of quality or licensing status.
• Failed generations still cost credits. A plan advertised as covering hundreds of songs is a soft ceiling. Regenerating because the first attempt was unusable consumes the allowance exactly like a success.
• Credits do not roll over. Daily free credits and monthly plan credits both reset. Only purchased add-on credits persist, and only while your subscription stays active.
