Google has officially launched its much-anticipated AI Mode in India, marking the tech giant’s first international expansion of the feature outside the United States. Originally introduced in the U.S. earlier this year, AI Mode quickly gained attention for its ability to deliver nuanced, AI-powered search results that go beyond traditional keyword matching. This rollout in India underscores Google’s recognition of the country’s rapidly growing digital audience and its strong appetite for smarter, more intuitive technology.
AI Mode is Google’s latest search innovation, built to tackle complex questions by breaking them into subtopics and pulling real-time data from sources like the Knowledge Graph and product listings. Instead of simple keyword matching, it uses advanced reasoning to deliver comprehensive, AI-powered answers—complete with referenced links.
For instance, a parent might ask, “I have two kids, ages 5 and 9, who get restless indoors. What are some fun, space-saving activities to keep them engaged and active at home during rainy days, without needing special equipment?” AI Mode can break this down, offer tailored suggestions, and even help parents ask follow-ups like, “Which activities encourage teamwork between siblings?”
Indian users can access AI Mode in English through Search Labs on Android, iOS, and the web. Voice input is fully supported, and users can snap a photo with Google Lens to include in their queries. While support for local Indian languages isn’t available yet, Google has indicated it’s in the works.
AI Mode runs on a custom version of Google’s Gemini 2.5 model, enabling more advanced reasoning and multimodal capabilities than previous AI Overviews. Early testers have already been submitting queries two to three times longer than traditional searches.
Choosing India for its first global rollout is no accident. As reported by TechCrunch and others, Google sees India as a key market for digital innovation and user feedback. With over 800 million internet users and one of the world’s fastest-growing online populations, India offers a massive, diverse testing ground for new technology. The company hopes to learn quickly from Indian users and iterate on the feature, with the broader goal of shaping the future of search worldwide.
Anyone in India can opt into AI Mode by joining the experiment through Search Labs. Once enabled, a new shortcut appears in the search bar, and “AI Mode” shows up as a filter alongside “All,” “Images,” and “News” on the results page.
With AI Mode, Google is reimagining how people interact with information, making search not just smarter, but more human.
