SpaceX has reportedly shown investors an early prototype of a new AI-powered device that looks and functions like a handset, according to TechCrunch. The device was described as “handset-like” and may sit somewhere between a small touchscreen phone and a dedicated AI gadget.
The report suggests that SpaceX is exploring a new category of consumer hardware at a time when major technology companies are trying to build devices designed around artificial intelligence rather than traditional apps.
However, the project still appears to be in an early stage. TechCrunch reported that the design could still change, and Elon Musk has denied the report, calling it false.
The reported prototype shows how Musk’s companies could become more closely connected. SpaceX already operates Starlink, its satellite internet business, while xAI is focused on building AI models and products. A dedicated AI device could combine connectivity, software and AI services into one ecosystem.
According to TechCrunch, the prototype is expected to use a proprietary operating system and integrate technology from xAI. That would allow SpaceX to avoid relying fully on existing mobile platforms such as Android or iOS.
This approach could give Musk more control over the user experience, especially if the device is built around AI assistants and voice or chat-based interfaces rather than traditional mobile apps.
SpaceX has already signaled interest in expanding into wireless services through Starlink Mobile. That makes the idea of a SpaceX-built AI device more believable, even if the company has not officially announced a consumer product.
A device connected directly to Starlink services could be positioned differently from normal smartphones. Instead of competing only on cameras, screens or app stores, SpaceX could focus on satellite connectivity, AI assistance and integration with Musk’s wider technology network.
Still, building and selling a successful consumer device would be a major challenge. The smartphone market is highly competitive, and users are deeply tied to Apple and Google ecosystems.
The SpaceX report comes as several companies are trying to rethink personal devices for the AI era. OpenAI is also working on an AI hardware product with former Apple design leader Jony Ive, while other AI gadgets from companies such as Humane and Rabbit have struggled to gain strong mainstream adoption.
That history shows the difficulty of turning AI hardware into a product consumers actually want to use every day. Many users already have powerful smartphones, so a new AI device would need to offer a clear advantage.
For SpaceX, the opportunity may come from combining AI with unique connectivity. But the company would still need to prove that the device is more useful than simply running AI apps on existing phones.
If SpaceX continues developing the prototype, it could become part of a broader strategy involving Starlink, xAI and Tesla-style manufacturing expertise. TechCrunch noted that SpaceX and Tesla have experience with large-scale hardware production, which could help if the company ever decides to mass-produce the device.
The bigger goal may be to create an AI-first ecosystem that does not depend on Apple, Google or other major platform owners. A proprietary device could give Musk’s companies a direct relationship with users, similar to how smartphones became central platforms for the last generation of technology.
For now, the device remains uncertain. The report points to early experimentation, not a confirmed product launch. But it shows that the race to build the next major AI device is expanding beyond traditional consumer tech companies and into the space and connectivity industry.
