A newly unsealed lawsuit accuses Meta, TikTok, Snap, and YouTube of knowing their apps could worsen teens’ mental health while still pushing designs that keep young users hooked and boost ad revenue.
Filed in federal court in California, the case pulls in school districts, parents, and state officials who say the platforms helped fuel a youth mental health crisis that schools are now paying for through soaring counseling and support costs.
The complaint, more than 200 pages long, claims the companies’ own researchers warned about addiction-like use, anxiety, depression, and harmful social comparison among teens, but those findings were buried or sidelined. The lawsuit says the firms kept targeting young users anyway, describing their products as a “public nuisance” that has disrupted learning and strained school systems and communities.
A key flashpoint is internal research at Meta that allegedly showed teens felt less anxious and less prone to negative comparison after time away from Facebook and Instagram. According to the filing, Meta halted a planned larger study after early data suggested clear mental health benefits from stepping back
from the platforms, raising questions about whether potentially damaging evidence was suppressed.
Plaintiffs argue that the harm is not accidental but linked to deliberate design choices aimed at maximizing engagement. The lawsuit highlights features such as infinite scroll, autoplay, highly personalized recommendations, streak mechanics, late‑night notifications, and appearance‑altering filters as tools that keep teens scrolling while undermining sleep, self‑esteem, and focus.
Internal documents cited in the filing reportedly show staff at several companies acknowledging that short‑form video feeds and endless timelines could trigger “addiction cycles” for young people. Even so, the platforms allegedly pushed ahead with products like YouTube Shorts and engagement streaks on Snapchat because they drove up watch time and daily use among teens, metrics that directly support growth and advertising goals.
Meta, TikTok, Snap, and Google strongly reject the lawsuit’s framing, saying it cherry-picks internal comments and ignores years of work on youth safety. They point to investments in trust-and-safety teams, parental controls, take‑a‑break reminders, age‑based content restrictions, and default privacy settings as evidence that protecting younger users is taken seriously.
Meta disputes the claim that it buried research, arguing that the halted study had methodological flaws, including “expectation effects” that could skew results, and that this is why the project was not expanded. TikTok and Snap say the filing misrepresents their platforms, with Snap stressing that Snapchat opens to a camera rather than a public feed and does not rely on public likes or follower counts as core engagement signals.
The case sits inside a broader wave of litigation and political pressure over social media’s role in youth mental health. Other consolidated lawsuits and city- or state‑level actions similarly accuse major platforms of exploiting teen vulnerabilities through addictive design while downplaying the risks to families and regulators.
At the same time, lawmakers are advancing child online safety bills that seek stronger privacy protections, age‑appropriate design rules, and tighter controls on algorithmic feeds for minors. The new lawsuit is especially significant because it centers on what the companies allegedly knew internally about potential causal links between their products and teen harms and how they responded, or failed to respond, to that knowledge.
