Grok Chatbot Spreads Disinformation During Bondi Beach Tragedy

Tyler Dec 15, 2025

In the aftermath of the devastating mass shooting at Bondi Beach on December 14, 2025, which claimed 16 lives and injured over 40 others, a secondary crisis of information unfolded on the social media platform X. While emergency services responded to the attack at the "Chanukah by the Sea" celebration, the platform’s premium AI chatbot, Grok, began disseminating grossly inaccurate narratives to users seeking real-time updates. Instead of verifying facts, the AI system hallucinated bizarre alternative scenarios, categorizing genuine footage of terror and heroism as trivial viral content or unrelated weather events.

The most prominent failure involved the misidentification of a heroic act by bystander Ahmed al Ahmed, who tackled one of the gunmen. When users queried Grok about the widely circulating video of this bravery, the AI dismissed the footage as an "old viral video of a man climbing a palm tree in a parking lot to trim it." The system further claimed the event was possibly staged and that the "tree trimming" resulted in a falling branch damaging a car. This dismissal not only confused the public but also erased the verified actions of a man who sustained bullet wounds to his arm and hand while protecting others.

Further compounding the confusion, Grok misidentified footage of the shootout between police and the perpetrators identified as 50-year-old Sajid Akram and his 24-year-old son Naveed Akram as archival weather footage. The AI confidently stated that the video showed "Tropical Cyclone Alfred" striking Currumbin Beach in March 2025, claiming the chaos was due to waves sweeping cars away rather than an active terror incident. In another instance, the system conflated the identity of the injured hero Ahmed al Ahmed with that of an Israeli hostage, Guy Gilboa-Dalal, who had been held by Hamas in 2023, thereby mixing two distinct and sensitive geopolitical tragedies.

These algorithmic failures occurred as New South Wales Police and the Australian government were working to manage the crisis, declaring it a terrorist incident. The disparity between the confirmed reality a targeted attack on a Jewish festival leaving 16 dead and the AI's output highlights the severe risks of deploying generative AI as a news aggregator without human oversight. Experts warn that such hallucinations during breaking news events can impede public safety communications and exacerbate trauma for victims' families.
