Google just dropped a big update for classrooms with its new Gemini AI tools, aiming to make life easier for both teachers and students. In a blog post and at ISTE 2025, the company unveiled over 30 AI-powered features that are now available to all Google Workspace for Education users worldwide.
At the core is Gemini for Education, a version of Google’s Gemini app fine-tuned for schools. It runs on the Gemini 2.5 Pro model and comes with extra perks like stronger data protection and admin controls—all included in existing Workspace plans, so no extra cost. Some users might appreciate the higher usage limits and the enterprise-grade security that Google is touting.
For teachers, these tools are a game-changer. You can whip up vocabulary lists, rubrics, project ideas, or even interactive study guides with NotebookLM, which is getting a cool new feature called Video Overviews. This lets you turn source materials into short videos, making lessons more engaging without extra hassle. Teachers can also assign AI-generated content directly to students and chat with the AI to tweak it, plus share custom “Gems” — think of them as AI assistants tailored to specific lessons.
Students get their own AI helpers, too. The chatbots can answer questions, explain tricky concepts, and help with exam prep, all while keeping privacy and safety in check. There are also tools for personalized quizzes and writing feedback, which could make studying a bit less painful.
Google stresses that privacy and compliance are top priorities here, which is reassuring for schools wary of handing over data to AI systems. The rollout is global and immediate, with more languages and features expected soon.
It remains to be seen how widely these tools will be adopted, but Gemini’s new Classroom features make it easier for teachers to share lessons, videos, and quizzes right to students’ devices—and even switch up the language when needed. I think the ability to lock students into specific tabs is a clever way to keep everyone focused, cutting down on digital distractions and helping teachers manage the class more smoothly.
