Apple has released its long-awaited Siri AI experience through the public beta of iOS 27, giving iPhone users access to a more conversational and capable version of the company’s digital assistant.
The updated Siri can understand personal context, answer questions using current information from the web, search across content stored on a user’s device and perform actions inside applications.
It is the type of assistant Apple had promised for years. However, after repeated delays and rapid advances from competing AI companies, Siri’s arrival feels less like a major technological breakthrough and more like the repair of a product that had fallen behind.
The public beta became available in July 2026, approximately 25 months after Apple first presented its broader Apple Intelligence strategy at its Worldwide Developers Conference in June 2024.
The new Siri supports longer, back-and-forth conversations rather than treating every request as an isolated command.
Users can ask follow-up questions, refer to details mentioned earlier and adjust how quickly or expressively Siri speaks. They can also type to the assistant rather than speaking aloud.
Apple has introduced a dedicated Siri application for the first time. The app allows users to reopen previous conversations and continue them across supported Apple devices through iCloud synchronization.
A conversation started on a Mac can be continued on an iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch or Apple Vision Pro.
This change moves Siri closer to chatbot products such as ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, which have made conversational memory and follow-up questions standard features.
One of Siri AI’s most important improvements is its ability to search through a user’s personal information.
The assistant can locate relevant details inside emails, text messages, photographs, calendar appointments and contacts, even when the user does not know exactly where the information is stored.
A user could ask Siri to find a hotel confirmation number from an old email, retrieve a restaurant recommendation sent by a friend or locate a receipt saved somewhere on the iPhone.
Siri can also identify information contained inside images. This could include a QR code stored as a screenshot or a number visible in a photograph of a document.
The feature reduces the need to manually search several applications for a single piece of information.
Older versions of Siri frequently responded to complicated questions by displaying a list of web search results.
Siri AI can now collect information from the internet and generate a direct answer.
Users can ask when a musician is performing nearby, where an upcoming event will take place or when a major astronomical event will be visible. Siri can use the user’s location to make the response more relevant.
The assistant can also help users explore recipes, research unfamiliar subjects and develop ideas through an extended conversation.
These abilities represent a major improvement for Siri, but they have already become common across competing generative AI services.
Siri AI is designed to do more than answer questions.
Users can ask the assistant to draft an email, play an audiobook, start music in a preferred application, provide directions or edit and share photographs.
Apple has also expanded Siri’s onscreen awareness. The assistant can understand content displayed on the device and help the user take action based on it.
For example, Siri could read a message about a social gathering, suggest a dish to bring and save the selected recipe to the Notes application.
The assistant is integrated into systemwide menus on the Mac and into Spotlight on both Mac and iPad. On an iPhone, users can activate it through the side button, a voice command or a gesture from the Dynamic Island.
Apple has added multimodal capabilities that allow Siri to interpret images and objects.
A new Siri mode inside the iPhone Camera application lets users point the camera at something and ask for information about it.
The assistant can provide nutritional information about food, identify objects or help divide a restaurant bill. The Apple Cash bill-splitting function is limited to eligible devices in the United States.
Visual Intelligence is also available on iPad, Mac and Apple Vision Pro.
On a Mac, users can select part of the screen with a keyboard shortcut and ask Siri about the displayed image, file or text. Vision Pro users can ask questions about digital content and physical objects by looking at them.
Apple’s improved assistant was developed with help from Google’s Gemini technology.
Apple used Google’s models as part of the process for training and refining its own Apple Foundation Models rather than simply placing the Gemini brand inside Siri.
The resulting system combines models that operate directly on Apple hardware with larger models running through Apple’s Private Cloud Compute infrastructure.
Apple says personal information processed through Private Cloud Compute is not stored or made accessible to the company.
The hybrid approach allows simpler requests to remain on the device while more demanding tasks can use cloud-based computing resources.
Not every Apple device will support the full Siri AI experience.
Compatible iPhones include the iPhone 16 generation and later, as well as the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
Apple also supports iPads with an M1 processor or newer, Macs with an M1 processor or newer, the iPad mini with an A17 Pro chip and Apple Vision Pro.
Supported watches include the Apple Watch Series 9 or later, Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later and Apple Watch SE 3 when paired with a compatible iPhone.
Some of Apple’s most advanced on-device features have stricter requirements. Certain iPads and Macs need at least 12 GB of unified memory, while enhanced capabilities are limited to newer products such as the iPhone 17 Pro generation.
Apple Intelligence currently supports 16 listed language variants, although individual Siri AI functions may not be available in every language or region.
Apple first promoted a more personalized Siri as a central part of Apple Intelligence in 2024.
The company later acknowledged that development would take longer than expected. A major release was anticipated through updates to iOS 26, but reported testing problems pushed important features toward iOS 27.
By February 2026, the upgrade had been delayed for approximately 18 months from its original announcement period.
The delays became serious enough to contribute to legal action over Apple’s marketing of unfinished AI features.
Apple agreed in May 2026 to pay $250 million to settle a class action lawsuit connected to the delayed rollout. Eligible customers who purchased certain iPhone 15 or iPhone 16 devices between June 10, 2024, and March 29, 2025, could receive up to $95 per device under the proposed agreement.
Apple did not admit wrongdoing as part of the settlement.
While Apple was rebuilding Siri, the rest of the AI industry advanced rapidly.
AI systems can now write and test software, generate images and video, analyze large document collections and complete multistep tasks with limited supervision.
Some AI agents can operate web browsers, use workplace applications and remember information across extended projects.
Against that background, a digital assistant that can answer questions, find personal information and perform basic application actions no longer appears revolutionary.
These features would have made Siri a clear industry leader several years earlier. In 2026, they bring Apple closer to capabilities that users increasingly expect from an AI assistant.
Siri AI is currently available through the iOS 27 consumer beta.
Apple is expected to release the final version of iOS 27 to the wider public in September 2026, approximately 2 months after the public beta arrived.
The assistant will initially have regional limitations. Siri AI will not be available on iPhones, iPads and Apple Watches in the European Union at launch, although Mac and Vision Pro users in the region can access it when using a supported language.
The new Apple Intelligence features will also remain unavailable in China while Apple works through regulatory requirements.
The rebuilt Siri appears to deliver many of the improvements Apple promised.
It can understand context, conduct natural conversations, retrieve personal information, interpret visual content and perform actions across applications. It also works more reliably for basic requests such as playing a specific song, podcast or audiobook.
For iPhone owners, those improvements could make Siri significantly more useful in daily life.
The anticlimactic feeling comes from timing rather than functionality.
Apple has produced the assistant many users originally wanted, but it did so after competitors changed expectations for what artificial intelligence should be able to accomplish.
Siri AI may represent one of the largest upgrades in the assistant’s history. It still feels less like the beginning of a new computing era and more like Apple finally completing an overdue repair.
